Maria Amaya - Legacy of Research, Innovation, and Academic Excellence

For more than 40 years, Maria Alvarez Amaya has combined clinical expertise, academic leadership, and innovative research to improve health care outcomes and expand scientific knowledge within and outside The University of Texas at El Paso. As a professor, nurse practitioner, researcher, and mentor, she has contributed extensively to nursing education, environmental health research, and interdisciplinary scholarship. Maria Alvarez Amaya’s work at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) helped foster collaboration among multiple academic disciplines and strengthened UTEP’s research capabilities.

Dr. Amaya became known for her groundbreaking interdisciplinary work connecting nursing, environmental health, atmospheric science, geography, engineering, and public health. She investigated issues such as childhood lead exposure, air quality, asthma, respiratory illness, aging, and environmental risk factors affecting vulnerable populations.

Dr. Amaya's research attracted approximately $25 million in external funding as either principal investigator or co-investigator. In 2001, she secured the first National Institutes of Health R01 grant awarded to UTEP, a milestone that helped elevate the institution's national research profile and demonstrated the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex health challenges.
